Since March 2007 we have partnered with the New York District Council of Carpenters in leading teams of volunteers to New Orleans. Highly skilled union carpenters work side by side with NOFD firefighters and volunteers from all walks of life to complete firehouse makeovers.
Inspired by the passion and commitment of these first volunteers, the LFF and NYCDCC developed a volunteer program, designed to bring new manpower to New Orleans each month, making the restoration efforts both cost-effective, as well as meaningful for its volunteer participants, many of whom are local and national union members.
This milestone in the rebuilding of New Orleans is being accomplished through the extraordinary generosity of volunteer union labor, construction material donations, and corporate support. Frigidaire came on board to donate an entire kitchen suite of professional appliances for each firehouse. As the kitchen is the heart of the firehouse, the gathering place where crews decompress and refuel in between calls, Frigidaire’s partnership has assured a significant boost to the morale of New Orleans Bravest.
As of November 2007, four firehouses are fully renovated and reopened. Three more will reopen by the end of the year. From gutted studs to finished renovations including; new electric, plumbing, air conditioning, insulation, sheetrock, taping, painting, flooring, ceilings, interior doors, and all new fixtures to even moving load bearing walls.
The NOFD lost 22 of their 33 firehouses, and 75-80% of the firefighters lost their personal homes as well, and had family members evacuated across the country. Yet during the storm and after the disastrous breach of the levees, not one member of The NOFD abandoned their post throughout the rescue and recovery mission, which lasted months.
With the generous support of Frito Lay/Flat Earth, The NYMEX Charitable Foundation, Frigidaire, Dunkin’ Brands, Hilti Tools, Kohler, Calphalon, Millwright Woodwork and many other contributors, local contractors and trade unions (see sidebar), we are fully committed to support the New Orleans Fire Department in the restoration of all firehouses rendered uninhabitable in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The Restoration of these facilities goes beyond supporting the NOFD. It assures displaced citizens will have protection and support encouraging them to renovate and return, providing a significant boost to the safety and morale of this great city.
Ahead of us in 2008 is the challenge of completing the four most severely damaged firehouses, and funding is still needed. To make a contribution: please click here.
